Wes Montgomery ft The Wynton Kelly Trio - Impressions (Verve Records 1965)

"Impressions" is a jazz standard composed by John Coltrane. While Coltrane only recorded the composition once in the studio (on June 20, 1962), he recorded it many times live, beginning with his 1961 engagement at the Village Vanguard. These performances produced the third track on the 1963 album of the same name, as well as two further renditions available on The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings. At least a dozen further live performances exist on various live albums up to 1965.

Its chord sequence is identical to that of Miles Davis' "So What" (16 bars of Dm7, 8 bars of E♭m7, and 8 bars of Dm7). Both songs originate in Ahmad Jamal's 1955 cover of Morton Gould's "Pavanne"

John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (March 6, 1923 -- June 15, 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. He is widely considered one of the major jazz guitarists, emerging after such seminal figures as Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian and influencing countless others, including George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Royce Campbell, Grant Green, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Howe, Russell Malone, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, Joe Diorio, David Becker, Randy Napoleon, and Emily Remler.

Wynton Charles Kelly (December 2, 1931 -- April 12, 1971) was a Jamaican American jazz pianist and composer. He is known for his lively, blues-based playing and as one of the finest accompanists in jazz. He began playing professionally at age 12, and was pianist on a No. 1 R&B hit at the age of 16. His recording debut as leader occurred three years later, around the time he started to become better known as accompanist to singer Dinah Washington, and as a member of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's band. This progress was interrupted by two years in the army, after which Kelly returned to Washington and Gillespie, and played with other leaders. Over the next few years, these included instrumentalists Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, John Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Wes Montgomery, and Sonny Rollins, and vocalists Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, and Abbey Lincoln.
This is a is a posthumous jazz album recorded by Wes Montgomery and the Wynton Kelly Trio in 1965 at the Half Note in New York City and released in 1969 by Verve after adding some overdubbed brass & woodwind arrangements by Claus Ogerman on four tracks. It has a Verve label (SW91588) and, because Verge was an MGM subsidiary at the time, carries both Verve and MGM (V6-8765) release numbers on the sleeve. The album was actually manufactured for Verve by Capitol Records.
