Old Awakino Tunnel by Drone

The Awakino Gorge tunnel, SH3, New Zealand - an unlined single-lane tunnel approximately 50 metres long. Built 100 years ago, and bypassed with a new bridge and section of road in 2021.

The Awakino Tunnel Bypass has made journeys between the Waikato and Taranaki safer and more reliable by taking traffic away from the almost 100-year old single lane tunnel.

The 2.3 km project involved building two new bridges over the Awakino River as well as a passing lane and realigning a section of highway north of the tunnel.

Pedestrian access to the historic tunnel for travellers is available, with a landscaped rest area and walkway part of the project. Of course, the lunacy of sealing off all access to the actual tunnel after parking in your fancy car park and walking a km down your lovely walkway to nowhere...... According to my search online no one has ever been hurt or killed by falling objects, bats, or mad cows in the hunderd years the tunnel has been in use, WHY SEAL IT OFF !? the public paid for it ! and since you have deemed it to dangerous to walk through, why waste taxpayers money on a carpark and walkway ?!

Work on the bypass started in October 2019 and was completed in the middle of 2021.
