Enormous Pyroclastic Flows on Merapi Volcano - Indonesia

NOT FOR BROADCAST

Video : Adi Susanto

Saturday, March 11 2023 at 12.12 WIB, there was a series of hot clouds falling on Mount Merapi originating from an avalanche of the southwestern lava dome. As of 15.00 WIB this afternoon, 21 hot clouds had been recorded with a maximum sliding distance of approximately 4 km to the southwest, namely in the Bebeng and Krasak River flows. At the time of the incident, the wind around Mount Merapi was blowing in a northwest-north direction. These avalanches of hot clouds caused ash rain to several places, especially on the northwest-north side of Mount Merapi and reached the City of Magelang.

Eruptive activity is currently still relatively high; this week lava avalanches were observed 19 times to the southwest (upstream of Boyong River, Bebeng River and Sat/Putih Kali) with a maximum sliding distance of 1,200 m. The sound of avalanches was heard from Kaliurang Post and Babadan Post 6 times with low to moderate intensity. Internal volcanic activity is also still high as indicated by seismicity and deformation data. Internal seismicity such as deep volcanic earthquakes (VTA) occur as many as 77 events/day, shallow volcanic earthquakes (VTB) 1 event/day, Multiphase earthquakes (MP) 6 events/day, and avalanche earthquakes as many as 44 incidents/day. Meanwhile, the deformation rate of EDM RB1 is 0.5 cm/day.
