Day 1 of the Mangamate Loop Track follows my journey from the River Road Car Park to the Mangamate Hut. I walked the loop trail in a clockwise direction as the weather forecast was predicting more rain. Day one and day two of the three day loop have more than one hundred stream crossings. I chose to walk those sections first and ahead of the predicted rain and run off. It also meant that I had wet boots for the entire three days and next time, would wear waterproof gaiters.

The section of stream crossings did take more than the 45 minutes I mention in the video, more like a couple of hours. My hiking poles really helped with balance during the the stream crossings as the stream bottom is rocky.

Mangamate Hut has nine bunks available on a first come, first served basis. The night I was there, the Hut was full however I had a new tent which I wanted to test and was happy to camp under the pungas, particularly as the more pork and kiwi were calling nearby. Listen to the video all the way through and you’ll hear them right at the end. The Hut is near the summit of Mangamate Hill and when you leave the stream crossings, it’s quite a steep climb for the last couple of kilometres to the hut.

When you are journeying through the stream crossing stage, the track is unformed and you have to watch our for the orange triangle blazes so you know where to go next. There are plenty of blazes and only occasionally I had to stop and look for the next one before continuing.

This is a great track to practice your river crossing skills, at the deepest point, the water came to just above my knees. The video was filmed in Spring 2021.

Hi I’m Sharon Evans, the Freewheeling Kiwi. Thanks for watching my video, I do appreciate you taking the time. My goal is to inspire and motivate other women and girls to spend time in nature and reconnect with the outdoors, wherever that might be and at whatever level they are comfortable with. Please share my video with a friend, so that they too will benefit from the outdoors and all it has to give.
