Blue Beasts unleashed | New Holland T9050 HD & 9684 | Pure sound | Appledore Turkeys

We visit the Wreathall family (Appledore Turkeys) on Romney Marsh in Kent. The South-East of England is home to two blue beasts which are the prime movers on their 1.200ha farm. They look after all the cultivations and drilling using a pair of Simba Free Flow 8 meter trailed drills. These have in recent years been upgraded with Trimble VRA technology to bring them up to speed with the 21st century. Both tractors are controlled using RTK-GPS. The New Holland 9684 is already becoming a modern classic and it is a seldom seen model on this side of the Atlantic. Unlike the T9000, which was produced in the old Steiger factory in the US, the 84-series (and previous 82-series) were build in the old Versatile works in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Up until the early 90s New Holland/Ford had been selling Versatile tractors in their own colours and name after having purchased the Canadian brand in 1987. In 1995 the new 82-series was launched being the first new product, although using a similar lay-out and components.

In 2000 this was superseded for 2 years by the updated 84-series, which also saw the Versatile name removed from the bonnet. The 9684 is the second largest model with 360 HP on tap from a Cummins N14-360 six cylinder engine that has a magnificent sound. It has a 12x4 powershift transmission and weighs 14 tonnes. In 2001 the new TJ series was introduced and production taken up in Fargo. Two years previous Fiat (New Holland) purchased Case IH and formed CNH Global. The old Versatile plant was sold to Bühler. An updated version of the 84-series was subsequently build and sold by Bühler Versatile and later by its Russian owners Rostselmash, who continu to produce a variant of this tractor for the Russian market and certain other export markets.

The T9050 HD was the second largest model in the T9000 line-up introduced in 2007 by New Holland to replace the TJ series. It uses a Iveco Cursor 13 engine which delivers 485 rated HP or 534 max HP. it has a 16x2 powershift gearbox and weighs 25 tonnes. It is build in Fargo, North Dakota where the identical Case IH STX was also produced at the time. The modern day T9 still features the same basic lay-out as this tractor.
