The Algae Dome

The Algae Dome is a four-metre-high plywood pavilion housing a photo-bioreactor—a closed-loop system that produces a huge amount of micro-algae.

In the future, micro-algae could be used as a form of nutrient-rich food, as a replacement for soy protein in animal feed, in the development of biofuels, as a way to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, and as a method of treating industrial wastewater.

The Algae Dome was designed to spark conversations about how we might grow large amounts of nutritious food in cities, reduce our impact on the planet, and use biology to solve some of the world’s biggest problems.
