Carbon Tip shrinking Andy Kelly
Carbon tip Shrinking
I could not find a video on YouTube demonstrating carbon shrinking so I quickly videoed this back at CNWL to show the principle used.
You set your single sided spot welder to the lowest carbon shrinking setting and earth the panel, you then press the button and circle the carbon pencil into decreasing circles and release the button once at the centre.
THIS PROCESS TAKES TIME BUT IT DOES WORK, be patient!
Turn the power up a little if necessary
I also heard that this can be done with a MIG welder so I made an adaptor to hold the carbon rods by gas brazing a curved piece of metal to an old contact tip, I wound the wire back and left the clamp up so that the wire never moved and I set the voltage to the minimum, I followed the same process to shrink the metal and it worked to!! I still prefer Oxyacetylene shrinking but if you haven’t got all the kit this works too.
