Advancing with Watercolor: Using Graded Washes “ Dry Dock"
This video was done to support my class which meets in the Plein air along Cape Ann and the North Shore area. We meet at different parks and harbors throughout the summer painting watercolor outdoors. In this video we are painting against the light. Are subject is dark background light and luminous, in the photo that you see in the beginning of the video all of those darks are washed out. In the watercolor we tried to revitalize them by using graded washes. In fact we use graded washes through the sky in foreground as well as in the shadows. Some benefits to using these rated washers are A luminous feeling to the watercolor, a feeling of light bouncing in the shadows, and of light moving across surfaces.

In each video I will address some of the challenges with each motif and ways to meet those challenges. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working under an open sky that we did.
