Fishing Spider facts: also raft spider rafts | Animal Fact Files

Fishing spiders are named so because they fish! These arachnids have mastered freshwater habitats and have taken to eating small fish along with other animals they can find on and in the water. Fishing spiders are able to skid across the surface of the water and even dive under staying submerged for 30 minutes or longer. These spiders are generally large, especially the females. And while black widow spiders are often cited for eating their mates after mating (kind of a myth, actually) fishing spider females can be really aggressive towards their suitors!

Scientific Name: Genus - Dolomedes
Range: worldwide in tropical and temperate areas
Size: 4in (10cm) long including their legs
Diet: dragonflies and other arthropods that have accidentally fallen in the water, tadpoles, and small frogs and fish
Lifespan: about a year - only about a month as adults
