Bird of Paradise facts: the prettiest birds alive? | Animal Fact Files

Birds of paradise are considered the most beautiful group of birds alive today. The 40+ species come in all kinds of colors with a plethora of different feathers. The males do anyway. A female bird of paradise is typically brown in color. The bird of paradise flower was named after these fabulous birds. They can be found living on the large island of New Guinea was well as the surrounding smaller islands and eastern parts of Australia. These birds may be called riflebirds for their calls, or sicklebills for the way they eat their food, but all of them are birds of paradise.

Scientific Name: Family - Paradisaeidae
Range: New Guinea, eastern Australia, surrounding oceanic islands
Size: 6-17in (15-43cm) in length (not including their tail feathers)
Diet: fruits, insects and other arthropods, small reptiles and mammals
Lifespan: wild lifespan is unknown; have survived to 30 in captivity
