🚆 Tilting train cab ride CANCELLED after technical error (Switzerland | IC5 Biel/Bienne - Zürich)

Sometimes, things seem to go according to plan and suddenly, everything changes. I have been thinking for a while whether this cab ride is worth showing or not and decided to go for it. You are about to see a very unusual cab ride and I hope you like it, too!

Here's the story: We're aboard an SBB RABDe 500, better known as ICN. ICN is German and stands for InterCity Neigezug, intercity tilting train. We depart on time, everything is running smoothly and without complications. During the next stop, a technical problem occured on one of the doors. On our heavily used network, if a problem isn't solved within just minutes, the train loses its slot on the network and is cancelled. Passengers are then better off to just take the next connection and lose only 30 minutes of their time, sometimes even less. But a cancelled train can't just stay where it broke down. The train still had to reach its destination after the problem was fixed, but has no priority from there on. We therefore took it empty to Zurich depot. The EMU went into passenger service again a few hours later and continued its task without further problems.

A little information on tilting trains:
The idea behind tilting trains is to allow for faster cornering speeds than regular trains. This reduces travel time without the need to build new high-speed lines or heavily modifying existing tracks. Just compare a regular train to a car and a tilting train to a motorbike. Cornering fast in a car is possible, but wears the tires faster, is more dangerous than ordinary driving and the lateral forces are unpleasant to the passengers. On a motorbike, it is normal to lay into curves, which results in a little bit more pressure into the direction of seating, instead of lateral forces. Tilting trains are usually lighter than regular trains and the center of mass moves into the curve while tilting, reducing stress onto its own wheels and the infrastructure when compared to the same speed without tilting. But it is a fact that the higher speeds do cause more wear, even if it is reduced by the tilting motion. Everything comes at a price after all...
