There is a condition known as fissured feet where there are cracks on the feet. Sometimes it can be so deep that it can look like a cut and it can have bleeding as well. There are many possible causes of fissured feet is here is disease underlying, but it is because the person is overweight or the person might be walking without footwear or the person may have dry skin or is doing a lot of household activities like washing clothes, mopping the floor barefoot. So these are the commonest cause of fissured feet. There are other common causes like eczema . Eczema is kind of a reaction on the skin, it might be due to stress like endogenous eczema or it might be an internal thing like contact dermatitis, like soaps, detergents. The other common cause of fissured feet is known as psoriasis. Psoriasis can come as patches of hard skin or it can come as cracks on the feet, which can lead to pain and deep cuts and less common cause can be diseases like leprosy. So leprosy is because the nerve supply is damaged and there can be deep cuts and sometimes the patient might not even notice. So that is why they loose their finger or toes, because the don’t notice because they had some injuries that got infected further and causes destruction of that particular area. If there is some other underlying problems, the person is recovering from some illness like prolonged fever for about 5 to 10 days like dengue fever, typhoid fever. In those situations they might have peeling of skin on the palms and feet. So depending on the patients symptoms and other diagnosis, we come to a conclusion as to what is the reason for this cracked or fissured feet and we treat it accordingly.
