Josie and the Pussycats: A Misunderstood Satire

Everyone expected the 2001 live-action version of Josie and the Pussycats to be an overly-commercial, corporate-product-shilling movie. And, well, it was -- but intentionally so, and as a deliberate, multilayered satirical joke. Yet, the way critics and audiences at the time seemed to willfully ignore the movie’s own obvious joke -- leading to its infamous critical and commercial failure -- reveals surprising truths about our own perceptions and how they can completely blind us from seeing what a movie is saying, no matter how obvious.
