The Doobie Brothers – Listen to the Music – 1972 [HQ Remix/Remaster]

"Listen to the Music" was recorded by The Doobie Brothers at Warner Bros. Studios, North Hollywood, CA in winter 1971-72 and released as a single July 19, 1972 on Warner Bros. Records. It peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1972. Enjoy my remix/remaster of this classic early 70’s rock hit.

Written by lead singer, Tom Johnston and produced by Ted Templeman.

I detested the way Ted always compressed the life out of Tom’s vocals and mixed them so far back you could hardly hear or understand the lyrics. I also didn’t like the drums so hot. I was determined to clean up Tom’s vocal and bring it forward so I can hear him clearly for the 1st time in 50 years and finally get the drums cooled down so they wouldn’t overpower the other instruments.

About my mix:
For the vocals, I removed that plate reverb and replaced it with a nice slow stereo reverb, raised the amplitude by 15% and gave it a brighter EQ. For the Guitars & Banjo, I uncompressed them ever so slightly to add definition and clarity and added a touch of slow reverb so they wouldn’t be so dry. For the Drums, I cooled them down by 20% and gave them a punchier EQ in the low-end so I can hear & feel the kick, but not have it overpowering as it was in the original mix. The bass was mixed perfectly and I left it untouched.

It was incredible working with the isolated tracks! Tom's lead vocal was so pure and the harmonies nice and tight The guitars and banjo were absolutely incredible. These guys were some of the best rock musicians and vocalists that rock music ever had!

Technical Information:
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocal, Guitars & Banjo, Drums and Bass into 4 separate tracks. I used SpectraLayers PRO-7 to DeREVERB the vocals. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range recovery, Reverb, Delay, EQ, and final mixdown. Sonic Studio’s Amarra Luxe Sound Processor was used for post EQ and upsampling. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
