The Vogues – Five O'Clock World – 1965 [DES STEREO]
"Five O'Clock World" was recorded by The Vogues at Co & Ce studios in Pittsburgh in September 1965 and released in October 1, 1965 on Co & Ce Records. It reached #1 on December 17, 1965. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] conversion of this classic mid-60’s rock hit.

The Vogues are an American vocal rock and roll group from Turtle Creek, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The original lineup consisted of Bill Burkette (lead baritone), Don Miller (baritone), Hugh Geyer (first tenor), and Chuck Blasko (second tenor). They are best known for their chart-topping singles "You're the One", "Five O'Clock World", "Magic Town", and "Turn Around, Look at Me". They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.
I never cared for the original sophomoric, bi-polar, lopsided stereo mix. The vocals were slammed in the left channel and everything else, [guitar, piano, orchestra and drums] were slammed in the right channel. I wanted it to finally hear a more cinematic stereo mix. Adding to my dismay, it was recorded on new horrifically sterile 1st generation transistorized solid-state equipment of the era. I desperately wanted to breathe some warmth into it.
About my mix:
For the vocals, I centered them and added stereo reverb to give continuity to the stereo image. For the orchestra, I panned them left and made them reverb into the right. I panned the Piano slightly on the right. For the drums, I uncompressed them slightly, panned them right, made them reverb into the left and raised them by 30%. I centered the bass, gave it a boost in the very low end and cut it by 15%.
Technical Information:
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocal, Orchestra, Drums, Bass into 4 separate tracks. I used SpectaLayers PRO-7 to isolate the Piano from the orchestra. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range recovery, Reverb, EQ, and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
