Well, a whole slew of us has decided that we wanted to do historically accurate Disney princess (or not princess) cosplays. After much deliberation, changing my mind, and a small hissy fit, I decided to do a c. 1897 Lady Cosplay from Disney's Lady and the Tramp. While the movie takes place in the Edwardian era, the 1890s really liked the tan/blue color combo, and I've been wanting to make some 1890s pieces anyways, so I figured I'd take the cosplay back ten years to the late-Victorian era of power sleeves and swishy skirts.

In this video, we're going to go through how I made my c. 1897 skirt, using an antique skirt in my collection and only Victorian sewing manuals as my guides. Taking the time to recreate historical pieces as accurately as possible helps me better understand the dressmakers and women of the era, as well as have a better idea of how my originals would hang and move on a real body. I am sooooo happy with how this skirt came out! She's got great body and heft and swishes perfectly. I also have a massive booty pocket that fits *all the things*.

What I love about these late victorian skirts is that they're actually very easy to make, and with so many primary sources available for free, it's very easy for beginner historical costumers or cosplayers to try their hand at following victorian sewing manuals for patterning and construction. Additionally, most materials are still around today, so we can easily achieve the period-correct silhouette without having to problem solve outside of the period. While this video is a mix of sewing vlog and sewing tutorial (light on the tutorial though, if I'm being honest), I do hope that I can pass on some Victorian sewing knowledge to you all to help out on future projects.

Also, if historical accuracy is not your jam or intimidates the ever-loving-tar out of you - no worries here - historical costuming and cosplay is about what brings YOU joy, and nothing else. :)

Polished Cotton: Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a reliable retailer of polished cotton online. I buy mine at a local mill-end fabric store, which doesn't have an online presence. Sometimes, you can find polished cotton online, in random colors - good search terms are "polished cotton" or even "chintz" if you're outside the US. (Usually, chintz has a print on it, but I've seen it refer to just the glazing treatment.)
