From Switzerland to Istanbul, Turkey -
18 days, 7 countries, 2 backpacks and 2 adventurous girls who traveled the Balkans by train (Interrail), by bus, rented a car, hitchhiking, by foot... We traveled through Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. The Balkans with its beautiful landscapes, places with history, warmhearted people, are just amazing to visit and even very affordable for travelers. In this 18 days we were just happy, we lived day by day and met a lot of great people. For instance we met at our first stop 2 German Guys and rented spontaneously a car. After that, the paths separated, but we met us again in Albania and rented a car for another few days. The Balkans may rank low on the world happiness index, but if you are in this countries you wouldn't get that impression. Yes, they had a tragic history and a lot of conflicts but the time has changed. We really liked to watch out of the window in the car and see a completely different lifestyle than in Switzerland. Cows on the highway, sheep walking alone through the streets, horses for transportation and working, rice and meat for breakfast, 2 Euros for a dinner, 10 Euros = 1175 Serbian Dinar... The people are more open than in Switzerland and there isn't this fixed system with a lot of rules. You see it how they drive, for example ;) Or a man in Albania once said: "There is no place here who is private, you can camp everywhere"
It was just a crazy time and we recommend it to everyone!
