Grayling butterfly on Rathlin Island
Rathlin is a stronghold for the Grayling butterfly, which is at home on the island's cliffs and rocky heath. They are easiest to see on warm sunny days during July to mid August, and at peak times we have recorded counts of 50-100 individuals on the wing along the cliffs. At rest they are masters of camouflage, immediately closing their wings after landing on a rock or bare ground, and almost disappearing against the background as they bask in the sun.
On Rathlin, 19 species of butterfly have been recorded so far, and about fourteen of them can be reliably seen each year - find more details in our report on Moths and Butterflies of Rathlin Island https://rathlinstickybeak.wordpress.com/2022/03/10/our-new-report-moths-butterflies-of-rathlin-island/
