Kashgar, Xinjiang Travel 2016 Featuring Karakul Lake

A long time ago, far far away in the west of modern day Xi'an, lies an important stop-over city along the Silk Road called Kashgar.

Here, there is a veritable presence of the Uyghur culture, food, and people. Islam remains as the dominant religion in this Chinese city. Stroll along the streets and be shrouded in billows of smoke as the scent of grilled kebab meat assault your nostrils. Like the merchants in the past, the popular middle eastern dish of kebab had also made the voyage from the west to the east.

There is also a yellow sea of handmade pulled noodles that is popular among the Uyghurs as well as the Chinese. The locals call it "La mien" and the Italians call it spaghetti. Yet till this day, the east or west origin of this yellow tangle phenomenon that is digestible to the stomach and slurpy on the lips remains arguable.

It's been said that Marco Polo was here in Kashgar in 1399 as he described the city as what we call a trade expo in the contemporary world. Apart from the wares that fill the bazaars, Kashgar also hosts one of the largest and oldest livestock market in the world. Every Sunday in the west of the city, the market comes alive, telling a storied past of the glory days of the Silk Road to the eyes of its visitors.

As you tread further south of Kashgar across the pamirs, sighting of the Chinese Kyrgz and Tajik population becomes a regularity. In Karakul Lake, it was camels, camels and more camels of the Bactrian breed.
