One of the unique things about Nixie tubes is that the numbers occupy depth in the display, as is clearly shown in this video. This particular Nixie tube was also doped with Krypton 85 - a radioactive isotope of Krypton. You can see the radioactive warning symbol on the side of the tube opposite the camera. Krypton 85 is an alpha emitter. These particles can't get through the glass. They are there to aid ignition in a dark environment.
