Backpacking Colorado: Needles Traverse/Weminuche Wilderness/7 Day off trail route San Juan Mountains

This is a bad ass off trail backpacking trip we did in southwestern Colorado's San Juan Mountains. The Weminuche Wilderness. It was a 7 day loop out of the Vallecito Creek trailhead. It was a spur of the moment trip, and we had a fantastic weather for being the first week of October. We were at or above treeline almost the entire way, and had non stop high winds. We started by going up to Columbine Pass. Originally we were gonna go down into Chicago Basin, but some hikers at the pass told us they were part of a group of 30, and Aaron didn't want any part of that. So we headed past Hazel Lake, Grizzly Peak, and into an un named basin. We then traversed part of the Needle Mountains, going through the Sunlight Lake Basin, Leviathan Lake, Silax Lake, and the Trinity Lakes area down into Elk Creek. We took the Colorado Trail over to the Ute Creek area, climbing Hunchback Mountain along the way. We visited Flint Lake, and then followed Rock Creek back down to our trailhead to end the trip. Lots of Elk. Kind of dead looking, pretty late in the season to pull a trip like this off. Not many people at all.
