Chipmunk Rock/Ore Crusher - Demonstration By Jay - Laws Railroad Museum And Historic Site

This video shows the operation of a small jaw crusher, called a chipmunk, which was used to crush rocks(ore) prior to it being assayed for mineral content. The chipmunk takes rocks that are about 1½ inch diameter and reduces them to about ⅜ inch diameter. From there the ore was pulverized further with a mortar and pestle into powder from which the mineral could then be extracted. Jay from the museum was kind enough to explain how this machine works with help from his assistant, Julie.
