2. SOUNDBITE (English) Khaola (no other name given), protester:
"To be honest I feel sad since more than three weeks. We cannot sleep, we cannot eat well. I feel so sorry and deeply sad about what I see every day - the pictures of people. No matter what's their religion, no matter where they come from, it is not okay to kill people, especially when it is children who have the right to live."
3. Protesters showing different signs
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Shahaid (no other name given), protester:
"First of all I am very happy to have the possibility to be part of a demonstration. You know the last weeks we got some problems to get a legalized demonstration. They were shut down often by reasons at least you can discuss about."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Shahaid (no other name given), protester:
"The most explicit (solution) would be a ceasefire to shut down the weapons, to get a moment to breath, to get together on a table and to talk first of all. Because as long as it continues like that there will be no win for none of us."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of protesters held a rally against the latest Israel-Hamas war in Berlin on Saturday.

The demonstrators waved placards with slogans such as "Stop the genocide in Gaza" and "From the river to the sea - we demand equality."

According to the police, the personal details of some participants were checked after they displayed banners with banned slogans.

The banners in question were confiscated or painted over.

The demonstration, which took place in front of the "Red City Hall," the city's town hall, had only been approved under strict conditions after antisemitic and anti-Israel slogans were repeatedly shouted at similar protests in recent weeks.

The police said they were instructed to break up the demonstration immediately if antisemitic or anti-Israel slogans were shouted again.

Last Thursday, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser banned the pro-Palestinian association Samidoun, as well as Hamas in Germany.

In the past, the association had repeatedly organised pro-Palestinian protests in Germany, at which anti-Semitic or anti-Israeli slogans were chanted.

The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has reached 9,448, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.

In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.

The UNRWA says 72 of its staff members have been killed.

More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that started the fighting, and 242 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.

Roughly 1,100 people have left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing since Wednesday under an apparent agreement among the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas.
