STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people took part in a gathering in Baghdad on Wednesday evening to commemorate the children killed in Gaza.

Weeks of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, followed by a ground invasion, have killed more than 11,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory, since the outbreak of the latest Israel-Hamas war.

The figure does not differentiate between civilians and militants, though some two-thirds of the dead have been identified as women and minors.

Demonstrators in Baghdad chanted and waved Palestinian flags as they gathered in front of a tribute of wrapped shrouds with flowers on top, symbolizing the bodies of children killed in the conflict.

“Today is the commemoration of a 40-day killing of our finest children in Gaza,” said Hiba al Khazali, who participated in the demonstration.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a four-day cease-fire — a breakthrough that will facilitate the release of dozens of hostages held by militants as well as Palestinians imprisoned by Israel, and bring a large influx of aid to the besieged territory, officials said on Wednesday.

The war started after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip blew through Israel's highly fortified separation wall on October 7, and attacked an open-air music festival and Israeli border communities.

They killed scores of people and abducted men, women, and children - including elderly and disabled.

Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and sealed it off from food, fuel and other supplies in retaliation for the bloody incursion.

Some 1,200 people have been killed in Israel, mostly during the initial incursion by Hamas while roughly 240 hostages were taken.
