Gold - John Stewart (1979) FLAC Audio 4K Video

"Gold" was released on John Stewart's ninth studio album, Bombs Away Dream Babies, in the spring of 1979. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, both of Fleetwood Mac, appeared on the album. Nicks sang background vocals. Buckingham sang, played guitar, and co-produced. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard album chart and yielded three Top 40 singles: "Gold" (No. 5), "Midnight Wind", and "Lost Her in the Sun". This was the bestselling album of Stewart's career.

I can so clearly remember listening to this song when it first hit the airwaves in '79....with Stevie's voice ringing out like a bell on background vocals, and Lindsey's production....it seemed certain to be bound for the top of the charts (it only made it to #5 but, anyone remembering the competition in those days can surely understand!).

From the vast wastelands of southwestern Texas to you all! My last video of the year (maybe first for some of you?!)...not sure if there's another year in the cards for us, but I want to make sure and send it out with peace and love to all my fans!

This video comes thanks to Michael in Berlin! I'd had a couple suggestions to work this song into a video over the years, and it always seemed like a great one to do, but I'd mostly forgotten about it until recently, when some of my channel friends asked me to work up something for a beloved DJ who was retiring at the end of the year. They had two suggestions for songs they'd like to see, and while I wasn't really familiar with the other song....I was very happy to see "Gold" as an alternative. So the video goes out to Rainer at Ballhaus Spandau (the oldest Rock Discotheque in Berlin!). I've been assured that on my next visit to Berlin drinks will be on the house! :-)

After departing the Kingston Trio and struggling for more than a decade to find success with his critically acclaimed folk albums, John Stewart finally reached his commercial peak with 1979's Bombs Away Dream Babies. It hit the Top Ten and temporarily turned him into a "new" pop star at age 40. Stewart's folk leanings are evident on this album, but it's mostly a straightforward pop/rock affair. The guest performances by Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham on guitar and Stevie Nicks on background vocals certainly helped, especially since they were still riding high on the success of Rumours. "Gold" was a thinly veiled criticism of the music business set to a smooth shuffle beat. Ironically, it became a Top Five hit. The bittersweet "Lost Her in the Sun" and the darkly dramatic "Midnight Wind" also hit the Top 40.

Kanan Road (pronounced "CAIN-un") is a street in California that connects Agoura Hills with Malibu.

[Lyrics]
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beatin' time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Ah, my buddy Jim Bass he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Ah, California girls are the greatest in the world
Each one a song in the making
Singin' rock to me I can hear the melody
The story is there for the takin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beatin' time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Flyin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
(Ooh, yeah)
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
(Gotta sing)
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
Rappin' on the radio
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
Slippin' out the back door
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
(Gotta sing gold)
People out there
