Notre Dame, Indiana; Receives A Hand Crafted Circular Carpet From Donegal - 1978

Donegal is known worldwide for its carpet manufacturing and one specially hand crafted rug is making its way to Indiana.

The carpet factory in Killybegs, County Donegal has completed a hand tufted carpet to be presented to Father Ted Hesburgh marking his 21st year as President of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

The names of every president of the university since it was founded in 1842 are woven into the perimeter of the circular carpet.

The Notre Dame motif has been woven into a centre piece of blue, gold and white.

The Killybegs carpet factory was built in 1898 by the Congested Districts Board. The carpet represents the sublime craftwork carried out at Donegal Carpets.
