Is your child experiencing Growing Pains? - Georgina Tay, Singapore Podiatrist

What are Growing Pains? - Georgina Tay, Singapore Podiatrist

When children complain of pain in the legs we often term it "growing pains" but what are growing pains and do they really exist?

The commonly known context for growing pains is inaccurate as the growth plate itself does not cause any pain to a patient. Therefore the answer is no, growing pains do not exist otherwise every child would have the same pain at the same age and developmental milestone.

However, after much clinical practice and obtaining a wealth of knowledge surrounding the complexities of Paediatric biomechanics, I would like to share with you several understandings as to why children feel "growing pains":

As the bone grows longer the muscles are unable to catch up and are stretched causing an aching or pulling pain. Malalignment syndromes including leg length difference, pelvic rotation or scoliosis cause overuse and rotational problems that result in secondary stress pain. Pains mostly come at night time as children loose all visual and sensory distractions around them, their senses hone in to focusing on the foot pain.

There is a medical condition where the periosteum of the bone or even the growth plate become irritated or inflamed.

Common complaints from children that should not be disregarded are:

1. When our children cry late at night with claims of having pain in the legs and feet.

2. Requesting for massage and hot or cold packs on the legs to relieve aches and pains.

3. Pain that comes after sports or activities

4. Pain that never subsides

These complaints shouldn't be addressed with giving your child aspirin as this can lead to serious complications with skeletal tissue and Reye's syndrome. Massage is fine but if the pain is worsening or becoming recurrent the child should check with their podiatrist as the pain most likely is caused by biomechanics and musculoskeletal variances. For example a flatfoot that overused and stressed the foot and growth plate during the day will be painful at night as the flat footed kid focuses on it.
