Rare Tornado Over Chilika Lake Odisha | Haathisundha Waterspout Near Kalijai Temple

A rare natural phenomenon stunned tourists and fishermen at Odisha - Chilika Lake on October 10, 2025, when a massive waterspout, locally known as Haathisundha (meaning elephant’s trunk) formed over the lake near the Kalijai Temple area. The twisting column of air and water appeared just after rainfall and lasted for about 5-10 minutes before fading away.

The event was captured on camera by several visitors and quickly went viral. According to weather experts, this wasn’t a Destructive Tornado but a non-tornadic waterspout, formed due to moist, unstable air and wind rotation near the lake’s surface - conditions triggered by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and humid post-rain weather.

No damage or injuries were reported, but the sight created both excitement and panic among those on boats nearby. Such occurrences are extremely rare in Odisha, though smaller whirlwinds have been spotted in the region in past years.
