Layers Inkscape

Using layers in Inkscape allows you to build up your projects, keeping key elements separate so you can hide, lock, or alter the layer's appearance using blur, opacity or blend modes. The layers panel can be accessed quickly using the toolbar button or from the Layers drop-down menu, give you full control of your layers in Inkscape.

This step by step Inkscape tutorial for beginners takes you through accessing the Layers panel, creating and working with layers, including sub-layers and shows you how to toggle a layer’s visibility, protect a layer by locking it, and how Blur and Opacity work and how you can move objects from one layer to another. I also show you how grouping objects on separate layers effects your work.

Putting a reference image on a separate layer and locking it will prevent you accidentality selecting it, you can also reduce it’s opacity and toggle it’s visibility as you work.
