Inkscape Pattern along Path | Extension vs LPE

Inkscape has two option for putting a pattern along a path, the Extension: Pattern along Path and the Live Path Effect(LPE): Pattern along Path. Both options have their pros and cons, as I discuss in this video.

You will learn how to use both versions of pattern along path, I show you how to loop a pattern around a circle or ellipse and I show you how to use the Bezier Tool to create a path for your pattern.
Both the Extension and the LPE functions give you a selection of options to apply your pattern to the path:

single – places a single copy on the skeleton path
single repeated – stretches a single copy the full length of the path
repeated – repeats the pattern around the path to fill the path, which may result in a gap or overlap.
Repeated stretched – repeats the pattern around the path and adjusts the size of the pattern to fill the path perfectly.

With Inkscape’s Pattern along Path extension you can use group, clones and shape as your pattern allowing for multicoloured patterns, but you can’t adjust your pattern live.

With the Inkscape Pattern along Path live path effect or LPE you can adjust your pattern live, giving you greater control. It’s algorithm also gives much smoother result than the extension’s version, but the LPE is limited to a single path for the pattern, so you can only use a single colour.

In this tutorial, I’m using the latest version of Inkscape – Inkscape 1.1
