Intent vs. Velocity During a Baseball Interval Throwing Program
During an interval throwing program, we use a gradual progression in intensity off the mound, from 50% to 75% to 90% to 100%.
A lot of people ask if this means 50% of their velocity. This is a common misconception. It is perceived intensity.
It's been shown in biomechanical studies that a pitcher who throws 90 MPH throws ~80 MPH when asked to throw at 50% and ~85 MPH when asked to throw 75% effort. This is known and factored into the workload equation. It's really hard to pitch off the mound at 45 MPH 😂
In my experience, this allows the player to sequence their mechanics better and not focus on velocity but rather on intent.
