Rescue teams search for missing jet lost four minutes after take-off in Indonesia

A search and rescue operation is underway in Indonesia after contact was lost with a jet carrying 50 passengers and 12 crew members.

The Boeing 737-500 dropped off radar shortly after take-off from Jakarta airport and was reportedly bound for the city of Pontianak in the West Kalimantan province.

Just four minutes into its journey, contact was lost with the plane which plunged 10,000 feet in fewer than 60 seconds, its flight path ending just off the coast.

Pictures have also emerged from a search zone which show rescue teams pulling debris from the Java Sea, however the fate of the Sriwijaya flight has not been officially confirmed.
