The VW boss who said lets build the baddest car on the planet and I don't care what it cost resulted in the Bugatti Veyron. Prior to that, he was equally as insane and just as brilliant. He said many things like; "Take on the S Class, ensure that the car can drive at top speed and not feel as though its moving, put radiators in the glass so that they NEVER steam up"...and that resulted in the lesser known Phaeton.

In order to sell a few, which is always a nice thing when you spend millions making them, the oddly name car came with the run of the mill 3.0 litre lumps etc, this one however came with the eye ball watering 6000cc block and it nearly caught me off guard. Wondering just what the big deal was I put my foot down, suddenly I was looking at 90 degrees to my right...at the center of the roundabout!

The car is LETHAL quick!!!! Favored by mob bosses, this is the car that you would want to be held ransom in, bar the fact that your dismissal would be quick; 0 to 60mph in 4ish seconds, you would have your own individual rear seats, fridge, TV etc etc... Although they wouldn't let you use the numerous hand free phones.

The Phaeton has the plushness to rival any 7 series, more real road grunt than an S55, yet it never quiet took off in terms of sales. VW should have taken a leaf out of Toyota's books and opted to create a new brand, such as Lexus.

Regardless of the little niggles the car may have or indeed the global sales campaign which was floored, the car was, and is a masterpiece of engineering and genuinely has it all, rarely I must add; potent usable power and refinement in one seriously good value for money package!
