Doctor who treated George Floyd says Floyd's heart stopped as he tried to resuscitate him
The emergency room doctor who treated George Floyd after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for close to nine minutes in May 2020 testified on Monday that Floyd’s heart stopped as he worked to resuscitate him.
The testimony was given during former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s murder trial.
Dr. Bradford Langenfeld, who at the time was a medical resident at Hennepin County Medical Center said he believes Floyd’s cause of death was due to asphyxia (suffocation).
Langenfeld said he treated Floyd for about 30 minutes with his team in the emergency department before pronouncing him dead.
Also testifying Monday, Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said he believes the Minneapolis police department will “forever” be judged on its use of force following the violent incident.
Chief Arradondo also read a department policy that requires officers to apply their medical training skills to help a person while they are waiting for EMS to arrive.
Chauvin, who was seen in disturbing videos kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes, is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He has pleaded not guilty.
