A fast-moving forest fire decimated the village of Lytton in the Canadian province of British Columbia, about 250km (155 miles) east of Vancouver, after days of record-breaking heat turned the area into one of the hottest places on Earth. Temperatures had soared to a scorching 49 degrees Celsius (120°F) the day before the blaze engulfed the town of 250 people.
