Tracking the Tropics: Tropical Storm Marco continues to weaken, while Tropical Storm Laura expected

5 a.m. Aug. 24: Tropical Storm Laura continues its trek across the Caribbean islands, moving westward across central Cuba and the Cayman Islands after dumping heavy rain across Jamaica and eastern Cuba.

Over the next day, the storm is forecast to impact Cuba, with a portion of the Florida Keys expected to feel its impact. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has the storm's potential path -- the cone of uncertainty -- just southwest of Florida, but its outer rain bands could bring about squally weather.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the middle and lower parts of the Keys from Craig Key westward to Key West, while South Florida and the Tampa Bay area remain outside of the storm's forecast path.

Laura is expected to reach hurricane strength by Tuesday as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. As of the NHC's 5 a.m. advisory Monday, Laura was about 175 miles southeast of Cayo Largo, Cuba, packing sustained winds of 65 mph. It's moving west-northwest at 21 mph.
