Arioso and Moment in time by C. Cui
In 1806, Nikolay Petrovich Sheremetev bought Ulyanka from Count Panin. After the death of his beloved wife, P. I. Sheremeteva (Zhemchugova), N. P. Sheremetev devoted the rest of his days to raising his son and charity. According to family legend, he was looking for seclusion in the Ulyanka estate after the death of his wife...By that time, the house of Count Panin was dilapidated, and so the mansion was rebuilt under the direction of the architect Jerome Corsini. A stone palace was erected in place of the old wooden house, and a picturesque lake with a square island was dug in front of it. The palace was furnished modestly.
After the death of his father in 1825, Count Dmitry Nikolaevich Sheremetev ordered to rebuild the old manor-house, repair the living quarters and furnish the rooms. Friends of the Count and colleagues in the Cavalry Guard Regiment often came to Ulyanka.
Count Alexander Dmitrievich Sheremetev - the last owner of the estate "Ulyanka", a famous musical figure, composer, honorary chairman of the Musical Historical Society and head of the symphony orchestra.
In the estate, the count founded the Peter the Great Fire Department, a volunteer team, consisting of 13 squadrons scattered throughout the Peterhof Road. At his own expense, together with Alexander Pavlovich Chekhov, Anton Chekhov's brother, Alexander Dmitrievich regularly published the magazines "Fireman" and "Fire Station".
After the revolution a school colony "Nov", was established i the grounds. A number of buildings of the estate was destroyed, but in general it was preserved.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the Sheremetev Palace was completely destroyed. After the war in 1950, the building of school No. 456 was erected on the site of the destroyed palace......
