Class 2: Discourse Analysis - ON CONTEXT

In this class, we introduce basic notions and focus on one of the key concepts in Linguistics: CONTEXT. More specifically, we refer to Michael Halliday's theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and its most relevant concepts, such as context of situation (register), context of culture (genre), the three metafunctions of language (interpersonal, experiential, textual) and the variables of register (field, tenor, mode).
Next up: GENRE.
