Geography

The municipal area borders to the north with the municipalities of Santo Tomás del Norte , Cinco Pinos and San Francisco del Norte and the Republic of Honduras , to the south with the municipality of Chinandega , to the east with the municipality of Villanueva and to the west with the municipality of Puerto Morazan . 2​ The municipal seat is located 206 kilometers from the capital of Managua .

Most of the municipality is located north and east of the Nicaraguan Depression (or graben) on the western slopes of the country's central mountain range. The region's rivers flow to the Pacific mostly through the Estero Real.

History
Somotillo was originally an indigenous settlement called Joanagastega , mentioned in the first tax assessment period of the Nicaraguan territory beginning in 1548; Spanish colonization ended indigenous roots through extermination and miscegenation.

It appears in the itinerary of Fray Alonso Ponce and was inhabited by Ulúa Indians at the end of the 16th century . The Franciscan religious and chronicler on his travels compiled notes, data and facts that were gathered in the book " Brief and true account of some of the many things that happened to Father Fray Alonso de Ponce in the provinces of New Spain when he was General Commissioner of those », written by two of his direct collaborators, brother Antonio of Ciudad Real, and an unknown brother Alonso de San Juan.

He has also established a dental clinic and a medical clinic where care is provided completely free of charge. SAG promotes visits by pre-origin missionary groups mostly from the United States, thus helping the integral growth of the community.
