Thanks for stopping by, this is 2 minute classroom and today I want to share with you the goal setting strategy that I used to earn a 4.0.
This is me in my freshman year of college. I was studying biology and wanted to do well in school to earn scholarships and get a great job.
Historically, I had been a poor student, with a GPA of about 2.7 in high school, so I knew I needed a solid plan to make decent grades in college.
Here is the strategy I used to make that happen.
I want to add a quick note before I get to the goal-setting portion.
This was my second semester, and it was actually my busiest semester. I ended up taking 18 credits worth of science and general courses that semester.
The method of goal setting I used this semester and all through college is what I call the breakdown method.
First, I start with four main areas for my goals. Goals to improve my mind, goals to improve my health, goals to improve my relationship with myself/or deity, and goals to improve my relationship with others.
I just use this to make sure my goals are balanced across all areas of my life. You can set multiple goals in each area if you want.
This is a picture of my actual goals that year.
Under improving my mind, I have:
Strive for straight As
Read nine new books
Learn Spanish
Under Improve my health, I have:
Build to a healthy weight of 190 lbs
Participate in my university’s intramural sports
Under improve my relationship with myself or deity, I have:
Study scriptures daily
Pray daily
Record my life in a daily journal
And lastly, under improve my relationship with others, I have:
Become more involved by volunteering
Cultivate greater sensitivity to others
For the purpose of this video we’ll focus on the goals in this top section. I achieved this first goal in that second semester making all As and earning a 4.0 despite taking 18 credits, volunteering with multiple organizations on campus and participating in intramural sports.
And I did that by breaking it down into smaller goals to help me achieve the larger goal. For me that resulted in these smaller goals:
Take a daily account of what I need to do for each course
Dedicate sufficient time and effort to each course each day
Absolutely no cheating
I figured if I couldn't make the grade my own, then it wasn’t worth it anyway.
So now I had the goal and had the plan, all that was left was to execute.
I studied the syllabi for all my courses, bought a planner, and kept a daily account of my schedule of class work and reached that goal.
Now let’s contrast that with my last goal on this list, learn Spanish. This is certainly a worthwhile goal and something that I wanted to do, but this is about where I left that goal. I didn’t break down how I would do it, didn’t make a schedule, and didn’t have a plan. As a result, this goal quickly fell out of sight.
If you have big goals that you want to achieve, consider using the breakdown method or SMART goal setting, which this video will walk you through.
I hope this video has given you some new ideas for how you can set and achieve your goals.
Good luck, and I’ll catch you next time.
