The Forbidden Forest From Ancient Mesopotamia

In ancient Mesopotamian literature, especially the Epic of Gilgamesh (c. 2100–1700 BCE), cedar forests were viewed as sacred realms connected to divine power and the untamed forces of nature. These forests symbolized endurance, memory, and the balance between humanity and the natural world. Cutting down a great tree was seen not just as physical labor, but as a bold act of human ambition against nature itself. The stories reflect one of the earliest known ideas about humanity’s complicated relationship with the environment.
