This week on Print Pros, Guillermo shows us how to turn the White Toner Transfer Printer into a sublimation printer. Just by changing out the toner cartridges, you’ll be able to transfer vivid sublimation designs onto your polyester T-shirts with this versatile printer.

Sublimation printing is a great way to create bright and vivid prints that are chemically bonded onto the garment, so it won’t crack or peel like other methods. As long as the items are poly-coated you can also use sublimation on hard surface items like mugs, coasters and more.

One of the best parts of printing T-shirts using sublimation is not only the ease and the quality but also the profit potential. That is because the sublimation process allows you to print your designs on plain printer paper to complete the transfer. Now, let's go over the material costs for this project:

Polyester white T-shirt: $5

Ink cost & paper costs per shirt: $0.50

This means the total costs to create this T-shirt are about $5.50. Looking at comparable items online, these T-shirts can be sold for $15-$20 each, meaning you stand to profit anywhere between $9.50 to $14.50.
Now that you know how much you can make, it’s time to learn how easy it is to complete. First, you’ll need to swap out each cartridge of your standard transfer toner that’s included with your printer for sublimation toner cartridges. Once you’ve made the switch, your printer is officially a sublimation printer.

To print your design, open the software that comes with the printer bundle. Import your image into the queue and select mirror print. Remember, the machine will mirror print to ensure it looks correct when transferred to the garment, if not the design will appear backward after the transfer.

Next, under the “job” tab, choose your desired media setting from the media type drop-down menu. For vector graphics or ‘cartoon-like’ designs like the one we are doing today, choose “Sublimation Toner- Vibrant Colors.” For graphics like photographs, you’ll want to use “Sublimation Toner-Accurate Colors.” Press print.

Once your shirt and design are ready to go, set your heat press to 385 degrees and place your shirt on the press. Place a sheet of Teflon paper inside the shirt to avoid any toner from staining the back of the shirt. Then place the transfer sheet print side down on your garment and cover it with a large sheet of Teflon to evenly distribute the heat and protect the garment. Press your shirt for 50 seconds with medium pressure.

Once the heat press has finished, take the garment off the heat press and put it on a table to let it cool down. After it has cooled, you can peel the transfer sheet off the garment to reveal your finished product!
