Here at Ricoma, we’re expanding into garment printing and we’re taking our subscribers with us, so welcome to our very first episode of Print Pros!
With the increasing demand for printed custom apparel and other types of printed goods, we decided to create a brand-new series where we showcase what today’s printers are capable of and how your custom apparel business can benefit from them.
In this video, our host Guillermo teaches you how to create a graphic t-shirt using the White Toner Transfer Printer and the Ricoma Flat Heat Press.
Let’s get started! For this project, you’ll need:

A black cotton t-shirt

Luminaris 200 White Toner Transfer Printer

Ricoma flat heat press

2-step transfer paper (transparent transfer paper + adhesive paper)
The first step in this process is to print your design with the Luminaris 200 White Toner Transfer Printer. When loading your transparent transfer paper into the printer’s tray, make sure to place it matte side up.

Now it's time to set up your design to print using the LuminRIP Software that comes with your printer.

First, select your paper size and type. Then, import your image into the CMYK queue and select mirror print. Remember, the machine will mirror print to ensure it looks correct when transferred onto the garment.
Once you have your design printed, it’s time to use your adhesive paper to create your transfer sheet. This is the sheet that will be used in the heat press to transfer your design onto the cotton t-shirt.

Place the printed image in the middle of the heat press, printed side up.

Place adhesive sheet on top of the print, with the yellow lines facing up.

Place the Teflon sheet on top and press at 310 degrees for 2 minutes with medium pressure.

Open the press, rub the design over the adhesive sheet with a piece of textile for 5 seconds while it’s still hot to ensure the design has fused with the adhesive.

Immediately peel adhesive sheet from transfer paper in one smooth motion without stopping.

What you’re left with is a transparent sheet with your design coated in an adhesive that will be ready to be transferred onto your garment.
Once your shirt is placed on the heat press, position the transfer sheet glossy side up, with the adhesive side laying on the garment. Cover the garment with the Teflon paper.

You are now ready to press your shirt!

Press at 310 degrees for 30 seconds with medium pressure. Once the heat press opens, remove the shirt, allow it to cool, then peel away the transfer sheet.

Your brand-new graphic t-shirt is now done!

Now let’s talk profit potential.

The material costs for this project are as follows:

Cotton garment: $2.25 from Jiffy Shirts

Ink and transfer papers: ~ $3

Total costs per item: ~$5.25

Looking at comparable items on sites like Etsy, a shirt like this can be sold for $15-$20 ea., which means you stand to profit between $9-$14!

And there you have it, an easy 2-step process to create a T-shirt you can turn around and sell for nearly a 100% profit.
