Stop Mastering to -14 LUFS (It's a Myth)

Why mastering everything to -14 LUFS is holding your tracks back.

Most people treat -14 LUFS like a fixed target. It isn't. The way you mix and master a track to hit -8 LUFS is completely different to the way you do it for -14. It's not just a limiter setting. The whole balance changes.

To push a track loud properly, you control the low end, shape the transients, and add density, all so the limiter isn't just smashing the life out of the track. Turning it up is the last step, not the only one.

The real question isn't what LUFS you should master to. It's what your style of music needs to compete. If your references are loud and dense around -8, mastering to -14 will make your track feel weak. If the song needs space and dynamics, don't crush it to chase a number.

Master for the record, the genre, and the competition. Not for a myth.

What LUFS do you master to, and why? Drop it in the comments.
