I FELL ON MY FACE! Yosemite Hike to Columbia Rock

I hiked up to Columbia Rock above Yosemite Valley to watch the sunset. It's a beautiful place to look over the valley and it's a relatively short hike at 1 mile, however, it's also 1,000 feet up in elevation. There are many switchbacks and the trail can be steep and slick. After watching the sunset I headed back down. It got dark very quick so I was hiking most of the way by flashlight. About 3/4 of the way down, I slipped on one of the many rocks covered in granite sand (which make them very slick) and fell. I put my hands out and fell on a large boulder. I smashed my face directly on the rock and ended up on my back next to it. I was really thrown for a loop and just layed there looking up into the dark with my flashlight several feet away shining into the distance. After a few minutes, I just had to get myself together and hike the rest of the way back to my car. I immediately tried to find a restroom to assess my injuries. Thankfully, I was not hurt too bad, however, my face did hurt for a couple of days.

Yosemite National Park is still one of my all time favorite places, and this is just a good reminder how quickly things can change. While I was in the park, there were posters for a man who went missing. I also know of several stories of people who simply slipped off the trail and fell to thier deaths. We like to think that these things would never happen to us. I've hiked the Columbia Rock trail many times so I know how slick that part of the trail can be. I tried to be as careful as possible because I've had many close calls there, but I still fell. However, this will not keep me from going back. :-)
