Close-up of Asian Hornet on the ground
This video shows an Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina), in close up detail on the ground.
Here you can see the distinct yellow tipped legs, orange face, dark brown velvety abdomen and yellow/orange band on the 4th abdominal segment. It is very distinctive from the European hornet (Vespa crabro).
You will find distinctive ID sheets and photographs on BeeBase, here: http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/index.cfm?pageid=208.
Although there are a number of species of hornets living in Asia, this species in the beekeeping world has become known as the Asian Hornet.
If you think you have seen an Asian Hornet please notify the GB Non Native Species Secretariat at: alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk
