She Lost Both Legs at 21. Ten Years Later She Became the Clinician Who Helps Others Walk.

Shima Nixon was in nursing school in 2013 when a car accident took both of her legs. She was 21 years old. She spent months learning to walk again on prosthetics. She watched the prosthetists who worked on her and made a decision. She was going to become one. She got her associate degree. Then her bachelor's. Then her Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics from Alabama State University — the only HBCU with the program — because only 2% of certified clinicians in her field are African American. In May 2023 she became the first Black female clinician with bilateral limb loss in the entire United States. She now works at the same clinic that built her first prosthetic legs. The place that helped her walk again is now the place where she helps others do the same. Tag someone who needs to see this today. This is Sol Kind. Real people. Real kindness. Every single day.
