Joan Alexander first walked onto the University of Maine campus in 1955. She completed every course. Every assignment. She was ready to graduate. But in the late 1950s pregnant women were not allowed to student teach. She was turned away. She never got her degree. She went on to raise four children and live a full devoted life. But sixty six years later her daughter Tracy was not willing to let it go. She took her mother's transcript to university officials and asked them to look again. They found Joan had met every single graduation requirement. In May 2025 at eighty eight years old Joan Alexander received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maine. Likely the oldest undergraduate graduate in its 160 year history. She said — I didn't realize it would mean so much to me. But I now feel that a hole in my heart has been healed.
