Russia declared a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine for May 8 and 9 — the dates of its Victory Day commemorations marking the Soviet defeat of Nazi Germany. Putin had floated the idea during his call with Trump last week. Ukraine was not consulted. Zelenskyy said he received no official communication from Russia about any ceasefire — and responded by announcing Ukraine's own ceasefire, starting midnight May 5 to 6, saying human life is far more valuable than any anniversary celebration. Two ceasefires. On different days. With a gap of fighting in between.

Russia's defence ministry simultaneously threatened a massive missile strike on the centre of Kyiv if Ukraine attempted to disrupt Victory Day — urging civilians and foreign diplomatic staff to leave the city promptly. That is not normal ceasefire language. That is a threat issued under the cover of a truce. Meanwhile, for the first time in nearly two decades, Russia's Victory Day parade will feature no military hardware on display. Zelenskyy said at a European summit in Yerevan that Moscow fears Ukrainian drones over Red Square — and that the absence of military equipment is evidence of growing Russian weakness. The last ceasefire — declared over Orthodox Easter in April — lasted about 30 hours before both sides accused each other of thousands of violations.

Fighting never actually stopped. On the same day as today's ceasefire announcements, Russian strikes killed at least eight people across Ukraine, including six in the town of Merefa in the Kharkiv region. Four years of war. Hundreds of thousands dead. And the two sides can't even agree on which days to stop shooting.
