Iran, a long-time backer of Hamas, is performing a high-wire act as it tries to manage the spiralling crisis in the Middle East. On October 15, Iran’s foreign minister issued an ultimatum to Israel stating either “halt your onslaught on Gaza or we'll be forced to take action”. Hours later, Iran's UN mission softened its stance, assuring non-intervention unless Iran's interests or citizens were targeted by Israel. Remaining passive during an Israeli invasion of Gaza would be a setback for Iran's regional strategy spanning four decades, according to experts.
